Baptist Friendship House

Mission Statement

In recognizing the worth and dignity of homeless women and children, Baptist Friendship House
seeks to minister to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, with love through action and
truth as revealed in God's Word in Matthew 25.

 History

Baptist Friendship House is located four blocks from the historic New Orleans French Market on the northern edge of the French Quarter.  It is a ministry of the North American Mission Board, SBC. It began its ministry on September 29, 1944, in a building at 732 Frenchmen Street. On June 1, 1947, it was relocated to its present location of 813 Elysian Fields Avenue.

The community has been through many changes over the years, but the continued purpose of the center has been to minister to the surrounding community and metropolitan area, through holistic ministry.

Over the past few years the number of homeless women with children has increased. Today families make up one third of the nation's homeless population. To address this increasing need of homeless women and children, on August 19, 1999, Baptist Friendship House obtained a permit to provide overnight accommodations.

Today, Baptist Friendship House has both its continued ministry to the community and the Transitional Housing Program.

Baptist Friendship House's operation is totally dependent upon your contributions made by churches and individuals. You are a vital part of our ministry. Thank you for your help!

Hurricane Katrina

When the hurricane was going to hit, we evacuated our families in the transitional housing program to Mississippi. We were only 2 hours away, so were still in the storms path. We were without electricity and food for days until our friends from Get Real Ministries (Baldwin,GA) came to our rescue and brought a generator, food, and supplies. We gave out the items for the next 2 weeks to those who were affected by the storm in that area of Mississippi. From there we moved to Slidell, LA and then eventually to New Orleans in late September. We cleaned out our building - we lost all our freezers and refrigerators. We did not get electricity to the building until late December. Our Water was not turned on until January and we did not get phones until March. The families that were in our program are now settled in areas all over the country. However, there are many families in our community that have not come back and we have not heard from them.

For a year after the storm, we housed teams to come in and help with rebuilding New Orleans. They gutted and mudded out homes that were flooded. We also partnered with Oklahoma. They sent teams in consistently from January 2006  to January 2007. They donated a convection oven and a walk-in freezer/refrigerator.

UPDATE

Transitional Housing Program

In March 2007, we started our Transitional Housing program again. We've had to make some changes to the program because the city has changed drastically since Hurricane Katrina. Things have become more expensive so it is more difficult for families to transition into their own homes. Please pray as we seek to minister effectively to homeless women and children in New Orleans, LA.

Up 2 H.O.P.E.  - updated 5/08

We are in full swing of summer programs here in New Orleans!  Up2HOPE is going well as we know many have been praying it would.  We have lowered the age to 9yrs and so far have registered 17 girls! We have summer missionaries that are helping us this year! Please be in prayer as we continue  to spend the summer teaching girls their strengths how to depend on God.

Project HOPE Child Development Center - 3/08

Day care has been a huge need for the city since the storm. There are fewer day cares open and many with long waiting lists. Day care cost has also increased. BFH has been helping start a day care by partnering with a church. It is a ministry that will meet a great need. Please pray that the process will be smooth and the day care will be able to open soon.

English as a Second Language (ESL) - 3/08
We, along with Carver Baptist Center, have begun a partnership with 2 hotels in the city to teach their non-English speaking employees basic English skills. Please pray for this ministry as we get to know the employees and teach them English.

Events - 5/08

June 9-July 25: Up2HOPE Summer Program
October 4: Pet Fair
